Last night

We went to see the HooDoo Gurus at The Tivoli last night and they were
amazing - great energy and plenty of take-me-back memories.
But the real treat (for me anyway!) was discovering the 5678s...
FABULOUS!

You might know them from Kill Bill where they sing Woo Hoo..?

If you want to see them, I think there are still tickets for the Sydney
and Melbourne concerts :)

(This is the first time I've downloaded a video from my iPhone!)

365-Knit

I know this has done the rounds on some blogs already but I've just found some new (to me) images and had to share. Have you seen Siren Elise Wilhelmsen's 365 Knitting Clock? Don't you love it? I'm seriously coveting this wondrous thing :)

This fabulous creation measures time by length, knitting away the minutes and the hours, and finally producing a two meter long scarf after a year has passed.

So cool... I'm looking forward to seeing posts in the future featuring interiors filled with meters and meters of beautifully knitted yarn twirling around the furnishings :)

Norwegian-born Wilhelmsen graduated last year as an industrial designer from the University of Arts in Berlin and has already founded her own studio. You can see more of her designs on her website and blog.

p.s. sorry... forgot to mention... all my attempts to find where I could buy such a wonder were fruitless. I don't think they've been mass produced as yet... but yes, wouldn't it be perfect to actually own one? :)

Friday Finds: Sculptural Ceramics

There's something about whimsical ceramics that I find incredibly inspiring and the work of British artist Katherine Morling has me longing to see it in person. I think it's the interplay between the fine artistry in its detail and the satisfying sureness and weight of the pieces that seems at once fragile and permanent. When I first saw them I felt sure they were made out of cardboard - they almost have that 'window display' kind of presentation. Discovering they were sculptures in porcelain and ceramic made me want to touch them and feel that cool surface that one would think was so at odds with the inventive forms they portray. They're so much fun, don't you think? :)

You can find more of Katherine Morling's work here and here.

Pegged

Now, this really made me smile when I came upon it the other day... Peg art! What is it about the humble peg? And why, actually, do we even think this ingenious device is so humble? I don't think anyone could dismiss them quite so readily once they saw Martin Huberman's amazing installation, Tender.

Working for an Argentinean design and architecture office, Normal™ studio, one of Huberman's design objectives is to explore what is thought of as 'normal' and playing with accepted social parameters to find everyday beauty. Huberman's idea for the Tender project uses repetition to create a composition that transforms the original object. Apparently, every installation has been markedly different because the composition reacts with the different rooms in its own way... ceiling heights, space, light levels all work to transform the work. I like that - I like the organic nature it suggests to our little functional friend :)

You can find out more at Normal™ studio.
I found Tender here.

Friday Finds: a bedspread + a blog

I found this amazing 70s cotton bedspread on the street this week. Actually, I couldn't believe my luck and felt sure that someone was going to rouse on me the minute I picked it up ;) I mean, who would throw out such a treasure? Anyway, there were no shouts... no rousing... So, I've washed it and let it dry in the sun and I've had it draped over the sofa on my back deck, admiring it while cooking up plans of what I could do with it...

Then I discovered this gorgeous blog, Loz and Dinny... have you come across this treasure yet? Well, the lovely Gemma has a different kind of giveaway going on at the moment... She has been given a roll of retro trimming and she's decided to distribute pieces to anyone keen on joining her project. You make something, using her trimming and then she judges her favourite at the end of September...

So.... you know what I'm thinking, don't you? Gorgeous 70s fabric from bedspread + gorgeous retro trimming = 3 Sheets winning entry... (hopefully!) Pop over to Loz and Dinny if you'd like to make something with this lovely trim. Don't you just love Gemma's banner photo of those two lovely ladies in their frocks? :)

Friday Find: Crystallographica

No doubt you've noticed a distinct preoccupation in what's catching my eye of late... I am so obsessed with architectural forms at the moment. What can I say? It's a disease. One I'm more than happy to indulge in though! :)
I came across the wonderful site of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp quite by accident and thus discovered the work of Irina Shaposnikova and her pieces for the 4th Year's final graduate show. I want to learn how to do this - I just love the construction of these pieces. They are a bit Martine Sitbon and a bit Balenciaga, don't you think? Hmm.. dreaming of being able to actually sew like this. Hope you enjoy these beautiful daydreams :)

Inspiration: Pencil love

Coloured Pencils by Jonna Pohjalainen

My inspiration today comes out of an amazing Creative Space day yesterday (did you have a peek at everyone's industrious goodies?)... Well, I saw many lovely things but I was particularly taken with a couple of posts featuring pencils. It reminded me of this wonderful photo I'd bookmarked ages ago. This is the work of Jonna Pohjalainen at the summer Environmental Art workshop of the Open Air Art Museum in Pedvale, Latvia. Coloured Pencils illustrates how the everyday is connected to the environment by showing how it changes during different weather conditions and times of the day. I think I could very easily live with this daily reminder as a sculpture in my back yard! I love it :) It would play havoc with the soccer games, though...!
Don't forget to have a peek at Kirsty's pencil sculpture and Annamaria's fabulous pencil haul! I originally found Jonna's work on this beautiful blog.

Friday Find: 3 Girls + a Goat

Bird Series Gift Card - Winter White

Gift Cards + Envelopes - Coral Red, Passion Flower, Pink Petals and Sea Jelly Pink

Mint, Ice, Dogwood Blue + Lime and Lemon Filigree

Recycle Design Envelopes + Cards

Oh, do I have a treat for you today! I know you're excited, fellow-worshippers at the altar of paper... Pray, contain thyselves and be ready for the gorgeousness that is 3 Girls + a Goat stationery. Luscious paper stock that has been hand printed and embossed, hand constructed and stamped... these are truly beautiful paper goods, lovingly fashioned for maximum impact and enjoyment. Can't you just see these lovelies on your gifts? It's the kind of product that begs to be touched, all those delicious bumps and swirls!
Brisbane architect, Steffen Tuck, is the talented designer and artisan of these goodies. She began making her paper products through a desire to recycle the multitude of magazines around her house - her Recycle Design cards and envelopes are still a main feature of her paper work. From there, she began creating more detailed and crafted gift pieces. The idea behind them came from not wanting to hide a beautiful card in an envelope (cute, hey?)... So, she reversed the order and created beautifully decorated envelopes to carry the simple white cards! So unique and such a fabulous idea, don't you think?
There isn't a blog as yet (I'm told it will happen one day!) but you can find Steffen's beautiful pieces at her Etsy Store here and there's even a Made.It Store here.

Friday Find: Uroko House

This is just too cute. I would have loved this as a child! (Who am I kidding - I'd love this now!) This gorgeous kids bedroom structure is by a Japanese firm called Point Architects and it's called Uroko House. Such a fabulous idea! Imagine all the blankets you'd have available in the house because they weren't being used to create cubby-houses under tables etc! :) Felt shingles on the roof of an igloo-like structure with shelves for books and all kinds of toys and treasures... I am in love :) You can see the original concept at Point Architects here. There's also a Flickr set of someone's house renovation where they show the Uroko House being constructed. Many thanks to this lovely blog for leading me to it.

Friday Favourites

I have two favourite finds this week. Both are artists who share an impeccable sense of form and colour. Firstly, the exquisite work of Anna Maria Potamiti. This really is work to lose yourself in – the colour combinations alone are such a visual feast, and then there's her delicate arresting style which inspires the imagination and feeds the soul. I really really love this work. You can visit her Etsy store here and she has a gorgeous blog here and a Flickr set of her beautiful work and inspirations here.

My other Friday favourite is Gretchenmist. I think many of us are already familiar with her beautiful paintings, but she has begun working on mini ones to make up as brooches! (I was so excited I thought about keeping this to myself but honour + decency won, thank goodness! This really is the sort of loveliness that should be surfing the tide of blogland!) So, have a look – the lovely blog is here and there's also two gorgeous store outlets – on Udessi here and an Etsy one here. Happy Friday everyone!

P.S. When these come up on Etsy or wherever, I get first dibs, okay?!

Friday Favourite

Postman's been + look what I received... a Kristen Doran tote from her new online shop and I so love it! This is her screenprint design Winter Nest - my absolute favourite. I know most of you are already familiar with Kristen's fabulous work, but just in case she's new to you, I've included some pics below from her shop, and her blog can be found here. Happy exploring!

Friday Find

I've just been leafing through the WFM and came across a show from the New York Fashion Week this year which I haven't seen before. These incredible prints and the clean-lined tailoring just screamed out at me from the page, particularly the collaborations of Heather Howard + Cat Janky (pics above). A whole page of the mag was devoted to the fantastic graduate show of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and apparently, they are the only School of Fashion represented at Fashion Week in NY... Can't you just see why? There were some amazing knits too – see examples from the show here or a video here.
