I've seen quite a lot of inspiring pieces coming out of Eastern Europe on the Net lately - a different way of thinking; a new approach to traditional arts which I find so exciting. This is the work of Severija Incirauskaite-Kriauneviciene, a Lithuanian textile artist, teacher and curator, who took part in the Strich & Faden - Heimat, Folk Art and Travesty art exhibition in Berlin, June 2009. The German expression "nach Strich und Faden" means to do something thoroughly, with great artistry and precision, but the term has also gained connotations of trickery or deceit in contemporary language. Severija Incirauskaite-Kriauneviciene's piece for the exhibition (detail above), Way of Roses, uses cross-stitch on car parts as a means of showing the beauty in the everyday and also to challenge the traditional artistic hierarchy of what can be considered 'high art'. You can find this and Severija Incirauskaite-Kriauneviciene's other work on her website here and there's a Flickr Set for the Strich & Faden exhibition here.

I LOVE this! You're so good at discovering cool exhibitions. I always like the mixture of soft textiles with something unassociated and hard in comparison.
This is unbelievable. And I was thinking it might be hard for me to embroider an old decoupaged canvas... piffle! I love it. THe juxtaposition of industrial and shabby chic is really working for me.
PS unrelated question: if you had to choose, black or maroon?
Fantastic Kylie, I knew you'd find something great from eastern Europe!
Oh my goodness, Kylie - these are so incredibly beautiful! Love the colanders - such inspiring stuff
This is wonderful! I'm in awe of the cross-stitched car parts.
I'm loving that industrial edge too - who said you can't mix metal + thread? What a cool find Kylie!
WOW! Those images make me want to have a go at cross stitching... especially the second image. Cross stitching is something I've never been interested in before, but seeing it done like that makes it seem a little less craft-kit, and a bit more exciting!
Goodness. I mean, really goodness. Thank you for the inspire - I have stuff rattling around in my head and this has struck a chord - somewhere!
kylie....

I have a bit of a *thing* for emo-broidery. Totally kitsch, cross-stitched and lots of attitude :)

wow that would be uber hard to do!!! it looks awesome!! I wonder if Mr Honi will let me do that to our car??
that's so cool. i love cross stitch (it's a nice SIMPLE craft for me to get my head around :) cross stitch metal is beyond awesome.
and i'm SO glad you agree with me on the colour thing! sometimes i must sound crazy, it's good to know else thinks like i do every once in a while. and yes, totally blame the matrix (apparently the matrix ripped off this dark city movie i was talking about) they're very similar and equally creepy (due to how close to reality they feel) x
Fab! I want to try that on the tea strainer. YOu find the most wonderful things. thanks.
bravo for new ways of seeing and doing ! i really am enjoying my visits here
Wow, love this, especially the car!
Ohhh ... you won the bunny :) email me a postal address and I'll pop him in the mail my email is mantahay@yahoo.com.au
Hi K. I saw this a while back and was taken by the sheer creative thinking of this woman (or is that a man's name?? Who would know!). I'm so impressed by a persons ability to think outside the square. Personally, I need A LOT MORE practice. Too easy to conform and do the same old, same old. This is my personal challenge!
What a marvel Kylie! A true inspiration!
Annamaria xx
That's beautiful, I love that intermingling of old, discarded pieces with something new to make them useful again. Great find!
